My love of history and work
In 2008 I was successful in getting a job in a Visitor Centre in beautiful Stanley Park Blackpool. This job involved looking after displays, knowing the history of the park and looking after the visitors many of whom came from other areas in the UK and from abroad. As I loved history this job was perfect for me and would sometimes get people in whose ancestors had been employed in the park or at Blackpool Tower or on one of the many attractions in the town. One day a lady came in and we got talking about the past and she was trying to find out about a certain ancestor - well I offered to help her with resources that I had available to me. She was impressed by what I knew about how to do research and asked me if I had ever thought of doing this kind of thing as a job. It hadn't crossed my mind at that point but later on in 2010 my job came to an end due to Council job cuts and after a little while of being unemployed and not finding anything suitable I decided to give it a go and started my own business in Genealogy.

Hello Bill,
DeleteThank you for your kind welcome
Welcome to Geneabloggers from another UK researcher. My ancestors mostly came from Devon and Cornwall (with a sprinkling of Foleshill, Warwickshire!). Good to see another UK-centric blog.

My husband is always telling me I should do genealogy research as a business, but I just enjoy the non-stress of researching. I don't mind doing lookups and helping others. I worry that if I slid into business end of it the fun would be diminished by pressure of solving the puzzles for clients - that is my sticking point. But hooray for you - doing what you enjoy!

Hello Jim,
DeleteThank you for your welcome.
Judi.
It waa lovely to read about your job in Stanley Park, Blackpool, as I was born in the town and have fond memories of family visits there. I went to Devonshire Road Primary School and then Collegiate School until we moved away with my father's work when I was 13. My mother's family came from Poulton-le-Fylde and are the basis of my family history research. There do not seem to be too many active British bloggers on Geneabloggers so it is good to welcome someone else from the UK. I started in August 2010 and have never looked back - it is so rewarding a hobby. Good luck with your freelance work.
